Our Story

JoyTrekking Tours & Safaris is a locally owned Tanzanian tour operator born on the slopes of our home, Tanzania’s mountains and wilderness, shaped by years of guiding travelers safely and responsibly through some of the most demanding and rewarding landscapes in Africa, including Mount Kilimanjaro.

Our founder, January, is first and foremost a mountain professional. Long before JoyTrekking existed, he built his life on Mount Kilimanjaro, progressing through the mountain roles, learning the routes in every season, and understanding what it truly takes to guide people successfully to their goal. Those years on the mountain taught him that a great expedition is not defined only by reaching the summit, but by how people are cared for, supported, and respected along the way.

JoyTrekking was created to reflect that belief.

Why We Exist

We exist to offer travelers a way to experience Tanzania that is deeply personal, professionally guided, and ethically grounded. We believe adventure should challenge you, but it should also make you feel safe, understood, and genuinely welcomed.

As a locally owned and Tanzanian-run company, our roots are here. This is our home, our community, and our responsibility. Every trek, safari, and journey we design is guided by three principles, professional leadership, respect for people, and care for the land that sustains us.

A Mountain-Shaped Philosophy

Years of guiding on Mount Kilimanjaro shaped how we work. On the mountain, decisions matter. Weather changes, bodies respond differently to altitude, and success depends on calm judgment, experience, and teamwork. That same mindset carries through everything we do, from planning your itinerary to choosing the right guide, pacing a climb, or supporting a guest who needs extra care.

This approach allows our guests to focus on the experience itself, knowing they are in capable hands.

The Meaning Behind the Name

The name JoyTrekking reflects what we believe travel should leave behind. During a conversation on the mountain, while discussing the meaning behind names, January realized that the word “Joy” captured exactly what he wanted guests to feel, not just excitement or achievement, but a deeper sense of fulfillment, connection, and pride.

For us, joy is found in shared effort, in reaching a viewpoint together, in learning from local communities, and in returning home changed by the experience.

More Than a Trekking Company

While Mount Kilimanjaro climbing remains at the heart of what we do, JoyTrekking has grown into a gateway to Tanzania’s wider landscapes, cultures, and wildlife through carefully guided Tanzania safaris and cultural journeys. From safaris to cultural encounters, our journeys are designed to balance adventure with understanding, and exploration with responsibility.

When you travel with us, you are not just booking a trip. You are placing your trust in a local team that knows this land intimately, values the people who work beside us, and believes that meaningful journeys create lasting memories for both our guests and our communities.

This belief shapes every decision we make and every journey we lead. It is what allows our guests to feel confident, supported, and genuinely connected to the experience. In this spirit, we invite you to discover what it truly means to Find Joy In Every Adventure.
