Overview

There is something timeless about setting sail on a traditional dhow. The creak of wooden boards, the pull of the wind in the sails, and the steady rhythm of the ocean immediately slow the pace of the day.

This experience invites you to step away from the shoreline and experience Zanzibar as it has been known for generations, from the water. Whether you choose to sail during the day or as the sun begins to dip toward the horizon, the focus remains the same, unhurried movement, open space, and a deep sense of calm.

The dhow glides gently along the coast, offering views back toward the island and out across the open sea.

Light refreshments are served onboard, and your crew shares quiet stories of sailing traditions and coastal life when the moment feels right. It’s an experience that works equally well for first-time visitors, families, and those simply looking to relax into island time.

    Flexible Daytime or Sunset Experience

Your guide meets you at your Zanzibar accommodation and transfers you to the coast, where your dhow awaits. After a brief introduction to the boat and crew, you step aboard and ease out into open water.

As the sail fills with wind, the dhow moves steadily along the coastline. During daytime sails, the focus is on clear views, fresh air, and the simple pleasure of being on the water. Sunset departures bring softer light and shifting colors, as the sky warms and the day gently fades.

Refreshments are served onboard, and there is time to sit, talk, or simply watch the coastline pass by. After your time on the water, the dhow returns to shore and you are transferred back to your accommodation.
